Community Comes Together for Annual NAIDOC Week Celebrations
The day began with a powerful Welcome to Country ceremony, led by local Elders who shared stories of the land, language, and protocols that have guided our community for generations. The crowd was then treated to traditional dance performances that showcased the energy, pride, and resilience of our young people.
Throughout the morning, families moved between art workshops, bush tucker tastings, and interactive stalls showcasing local services. The art workshops were a highlight, with participants of all ages creating vibrant works inspired by Country, culture, and family history. Meanwhile, the bush tucker stall offered a delicious taste of traditional foods - from lemon myrtle to kakadu plum - prepared with love by community volunteers.
One of the most moving parts of the day was the Elders storytelling session. In a quiet, shaded area, community members gathered to listen to stories of struggle, survival, and strength. The session was a reminder that our history is living, and that the wisdom of our Elders remains the foundation of everything we do.
The day wrapped up with a community BBQ that brought everyone together. There were games for the kids, music, and plenty of laughter. It was a day that felt truly community-led - organised by volunteers, supported by local partners, and enjoyed by people from every corner of our community.
As we look ahead to the year ahead, events like NAIDOC Week remind us of the power of community. They remind us that healing, growth, and celebration are all possible when we work together, listen to each other's stories, and honour the cultures that make our community so strong.
